Ma Vie En Rose

Ma vie en rose (English translation: My Life in Pink) is a 1997 Franco-Belgian drama film directed by Alain Berliner. It tells the story of Ludovic, a transgender girl, and depicts her family and community struggling to accept her gender identity.

Ma vie en rose

Ma vie en rose received critical acclaim. On review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, it has a 92% approval score based on 25 reviews, with an average rating of 7.50/10. The consensus states: "Ma Vie en Rose follows a boy's exploration of his gender identity with warmth and empathy - for its young protagonist as well as the family affected by his journey."[6]

Though the sociopolitical connotations are more nuanced in French, the word "bourgeois" has, in English, come to refer to the middle class, with definitions like "a person whose political, economic, and social opinions are believed to be determined mainly by concern for property values and conventional respectability" or even "a mediocre, unimaginative, or materialistic person." Ma vie en rose ("My Life in Pink"), from Belgian filmmaker Alain Berliner, is all about the unimaginative struggle to maintain conventional respectability, and the transgender child who is having none of it.

However, the film suggests that Ludovic and the rest of the family live happily ever after. In her new neighborhood, Ludovic befriends Chris, a transgendered girl named after co-writer Chris Vander Stappen. At a party, Chris demands to trade clothes with Ludovic, who is wearing boyish attire. Afraid that her parents will be angry with her for wearing a dress, Ludovic flees. Her mother slaps her for insubordination and hallucinates that her daughter disappears into a billboard advertisement for Pam. Hannah follows Ludovic in, resulting in a transformative moment. When she wakes up back at the house, she is surrounded by a family and neighborhood who embrace Ludovic as female. Though this is perhaps too pat of an ending which turns Ma vie en rose into a fairytale, and while this is not a shared experience for all transgendered children, it hints at a future that requires communities working together with kids and trusting their abilities to forge personal identities in order to guarantee it. The phrase la vie en rose is French for "life through rose-coloured glasses" or literally "life in pink". It is also the title of the signature song of famous French singer Édith Piaf and also famously covered, rendered in English and added with more elaborate brass instrumentation in a re-recording by Louis Armstrong.

The name of this wine (meaning "Life in Pink") may refer to the rosy-pink color of the grape used to produce it, but it also alludes to the pronounced aroma of rose petals that greets the nose. Biodynamically produced by Mateo Deiss on the family's property, this elegant, fully bodied Gewurtz is a joy to drink. An oily texture joins notes of apple cider on the palate, culminating in a lightly sweet finish that lingers on and on.

For my first film, I chose a first film. I liked the idea that it would be a double discovery for me: the adventure of a feature film and the encounter with a new director, a new world. The thing that won me over in Chris Vander Stappen's screenplay was the depiction of this childish, open and magical world where everything is possible. Then, I saw Alain Berliner's short film and found it remarkable for its audacity and poetry, the very qualities required to direct "Ma vie en rose". Production, just like distribution, requires both financial and aesthetic commitment. I felt it was important to invest myself in a subject that has been barely tackled by French cinema: the fundamental ambivalence in every human being. A producer's work is a task of presence and perseverance throughout the development of the project: thirteen drafts of the screenplay, a very long and complicated casting process. In the end, deciding to produce someone is a little like getting married...(Carole Scotta, producer of "Ma vie en rose") 041b061a72
